I am Eric Glover, the creator of this site and the leader of the Doubtless Living Bible study group at ClearView Baptist Church in Franklin, Tennessee. I am married to Tina Glover and we have two grown children and one wonderful grandson. I have taught Bible study classes to adults of all ages for more than 25 years and teaching God’s Word is one of my greatest passions in life. I am an ordained Southern Baptist minister and I attended Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth, Texas. I have served churches in many capacities over the years, but I am called by God to teach His Word and that is what I love doing most of all. Professionally, I serve as the Vice President of Retail Operations for LifeWay Christian Stores, one of the largest Christian retailers in the world with 160 stores across America. I have a Masters of Business Administration degree from the University of Connecticut and a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration degree from Missouri Southern State University. I am also a Certified Public Accountant, although I have not practiced public accounting for many years.

Living on Borrowed Time

Take a quick look at the graphic above and reflect on that statement for a moment; who immediately comes to mind? For most of us, if not all, an image will pop into your mind’s eye of someone who is truly “living on borrowed time.”  Maybe it’s someone who miraculously survived a perilous accident, or someone who overcame all odds to beat a life-threatening illness, or someone who repeatedly takes hair-raising risk just for the sake of the adrenaline rush it brings. And, I have no doubt that more than a few of you know someone in each of these categories.

Several of you met my brother Dennis a few weeks ago when he and my sister-in-law Sherry where in town for a visit. We had a wonderful time catching up with them! My brother and I sat at the table and told and retold stories of our youth until the wee hours of the morning. It was great fun and I don’t recall the last time I laughed so hard. Our wives, who thought they had heard it all before, sat wide-eyes many times as we regaled them with story after story they had not heard before. Let’s just say the phrase “you’re lucky to be alive” was uttered on more than one occasion. Indeed, a truer statement has never been spoken.

While we laughed at that characterization, we simultaneously acknowledged it’s truth. Indeed, we are lucky to be alive, as are many of you I’m sure.  You see, all of us are living on borrowed time. None of us are guaranteed another day of life and each of us enjoy it purely by the grace of God. Sudden calamity can strike at any time, without warning. How should we prepare for it? How should we live in advance of it?

In our focal passage today, Jesus addressed two incidents where time ran out for certain individuals. In Luke 13:1-9, the people asked Jesus about two tragic situations and His response was profound. He made it clear that we each share a great common denominator, and it may not be what you think it is. He also gave us a great object lesson of how we can use everyday life events to initiate deep gospel conversations. The type of conversations that can stop time!
