There’s No Place Like Home

Whether Perry Como’s Home for the Holidays or for Dorothy in the Wizard of Oz, home is a warm, fuzzy word that has only grown in our hearts as we get older. We can spend a great deal of time and money on home. There are entire industries devoted to home: home builders, home improvement stores, TV shows and networks dedicated to all things home. We revere our childhood homes with tenderness and often tweak our current homes for the joys of grandchildren. It is our refuge when our worlds seem to spin out of control and home is where we can simply be ourselves at the end of each day. Everyone wants to be at home. It’s familiar and comforting.
Back in 2012, US News ran an article, “Why Our Homes Make Us Happy”. The author noted that home provides security, control, belonging, identity, and privacy, among other things. But most of all, it’s a place that provides us with a centering – a place from which we leave each morning and to which we return each evening.
As we continue our study on ‘Heaven’, I can’t help but draw comparisons to our earthy homes and our new heavenly home. Will I still have my herb garden? It sure smells heavenly! And what about the lilies from Grand Ma Ma’s farm? Oh! What about where our children put handprints in the concrete?
