Ultimate Trust (Luke 23:44-49)

Have you ever had to trust your life into someone else’s hands?  For those of you with military experience, that may be old hat to you because you did it so often it became second nature to you. Thank you!

For the rest of us, it can be scary. It matters not whether you were about to undergo surgery for a life-threatening ailment or whether you were involved in an unfortunate accident and had to be rescued, your survival depended upon the one you trusted to see you through it. You placed your life in their hands and demonstrated trust by so doing.

If you were the Creator of the Universe, who would you trust with your life? Ponder that thought for a moment and then consider how huge of a step Jesus took for you and for me. As he hung there on the cross, crucified between criminals, He could have said stop at any time. He could have called legions of angels to His rescue. But He didn’t. He voluntarily surrendered His life and placed it into the hands of the Father, will total confidence that He would be resurrected. Now that’s ultimate trust.

But, before He breathed His last and gave up the Spirit, He endured immense pain and suffering. God’s infinite wrath, moved by infinite righteousness, released infinite punishment on the Son, for our benefit. The son lost its light, the earth shook, rocks split, the temple veil tore, and the dead were raised. In just three hours, Jesus absorbed all the punishment of eternal hell for all who will ever believe. Seeing it happen was enough to make a believer out of a hard-hearted Centurion and strike fear into the hearts of His accusers.

I hope you will join us for this study from Luke’s Gospel as we look at Jesus’ final three hours on the cross.
