Surprise: We’re Here!

We’ve all had it happen. Suddenly the doorbell rings, you look through the window or peep hole and there they stand, a group of unexpected guests.  Surprise, they say as you open the door. And with that, there goes your best laid plans for the day.

On top of that, imagine your kids have just returned from camp and you had just sat down with them in the living room to hear their stories of adventure and excitement. Their effusive energy and excitement are contagious as they regale you with story after story. You are so proud of them for taking this big step in their journey to adulthood.  And it is at that very moment that the door rings. Surprise!

If you can imagine that situation occurring, then you can relate to the story we will unpack in our study today. As Luke 9 begins, we find Jesus having sent the Twelve on their very first solo mission where they accomplished great and mighty things through His power and authority. They have just returned full of energy and excitement eager to tell him all about their great adventure. They withdraw privately to a remote place on the northern shore of the Sea of Galilee near the town of Bethsaida and just about the time the Apostles start to tell their stories, the doorbell rings. Figuratively speaking of course.

How would you expect Jesus to respond? How about the Apostles who were on the verge of regaling Jesus for hours with stories of their great and mighty conquests? It’s in the middle of that context that one of the greatest miracles of the Bible occurs and too often we miss important aspects of the story because we fail to appreciate the context in which it all happened.

Join us as we unpack Luke 9:1-17 in our study this week.  Trust me, the story is about far more than just a meal. Don’t get lost in the loaves and the fish and miss the majesty of the moment when Jesus teaches the Twelve an indelible lesson that will guide them the rest of their ministry. For nothing will be impossible with God!
