Most
of us know someone today who is facing a serious illness that threatens their ability
to live life to the fullest, or perhaps even to live it at all. And sadly, many of us also know someone who is
grieving the loss of a dearly loved family member who lost the battle. If you are among that group today then take heart,
you are not alone.
After
completing His sermon on the plain, Jesus made his way to two small towns in
Galilee where He encountered people facing these exact problems. In Capernaum, there was a Centurion whose dearly
loved servant was gravely ill. And in
Nain, a widow grieved the loss of her only child. In both situations, Jesus demonstrated great
compassion, power and authority to bring healing to those in need.
Like
the Centurion and the widow, we often face major, threatening obstacles outside
of our control. And if we allow them,
they will impede us in every way and lead to frustration and disappointment. And while we may not be able to move or
remove those obstacles, we can overcome them and rise above them through faith
in a God who heals, made available to us by a Savior who cares and administered
to us through the power of the indwelling Holy Spirit.
If
you know someone who is seriously ill or if you know someone who is grieving
the loss of a loved one, then come along on the journey with Jesus as He
ventures from Capernaum to Nain administering healing and compassion to those
in need. And like the Centurion, we can
learn to approach him boldly with our petitions and wait eagerly and expectantly
for Him to answer.
Come see and hear how Jesus exercised His authority over sickness and death in our focal passage this week form Luke 7:1-17.
