Recognize the symbols above? I certainly do; they are two of the most often used functions on my computer. It doesn’t matter what application we’re talking about, those two tiny icons at the top left of my screen get tons of use. How about you? Are you a master of the Undo/Redo function like me? I can’t even fathom how many times those little buttons have saved me from catastrophe over the years. I have no idea who invented the concept in computing but whomever it was they deserve a Noble Prize in my book!
Did you happen to notice how I qualified that last statement a bit? Well, that’s because I really do know who invented the undo and redo concept. Do you? Sure, you do, it was the One who created all things of course. And thanks be to God, He allows us to use them in life too. But God’s buttons are infinitely better than any undo/redo button you will ever have on your computer. His undo button is the be-all end-all button of undo. It’s a once and done button, it clears up every mistake we’ve ever made or ever will make. And His redo button has no limit on the number of times it can be used. Now, how cool is that! Who in the world doesn’t want to use those buttons?
Believe it or not, there are some folks who just refuse to use them. Yep, shockingly, they refuse to admit they even need them. Don’t make mistakes; don’t need the undo button. But, even if you do use them, you better not do it outside of approved work times. That’s strictly forbidden and will be promptly condemned and sternly reprimanded.
Sounds absurd, doesn’t it. But sadly, it happens all too often. At least figuratively, if not literally. Take for example our focal passage this week from Luke 13:10-21. Jesus gave his detractors another chance to use the undo button but once again they rejected it, for a fourth time. All because it did not fit into the structured rule set, which they had constructed. It was ludicrous and Jesus told them so, in one way or another.
I hope you can join us for the study this week, I’m looking forward to seeing you. And until then, thanks to the wonderful saving grace of our Almighty God, feel free to press undo and redo to your hearts content. It is allowed. In fact, He encourages it!
