Neutrality Inadvisable: Warnings About Response

Don’t just stand there, do something! That would likely be your response to yourself or anyone within ear shot if you walked around the corner of your home and saw something like the picture above. Granted, things would not likely get to such a state overnight, but it could happen due to any number of causes. An earthquake, nearby blasting, erosion, soil compaction, etc. But whatever the instigator, you must do something about it, or matters will only get worse. A situation like this will not fix itself and it must be addressed.

In fact, if you don’t do something about it soon, then even more damage will be done. Water will seep through the cracks and begin to rot away the wood frame on the inside. Pests will have easy access to the fertile environment that lays behind the bricks, out of reach of pesky exterminators and pesticides. It’s hard to imagine varmints or reptiles not taking advantage of the easy access to slip through those cracks and take up residence on the inside. Whatever the situation, there are no good outcomes from leaving something like this undone. Doing nothing could be catastrophic.

That situation is a bit like the story we encounter this week in Luke chapter 11. Jesus recently healed a man from demon possession, which cleaned out a bunch of bad stuff from his life and left a big hole that should have been easily filled by devotion to God in humble gratification for the deliverance he had received. Jesus likened him to a clean, empty house. But what if the man didn’t invite God to take up residence in that clean house. What if instead he left the door open and went on with his life, despite the miraculous encounter he had with Jesus. What might happen in that situation?

What did Jesus expect him to do instead? Why does it matter? What difference does it make? How does that story relate to us? Join us for this study and find out the answers to all of these questions, as we unpack Luke 11:24-32 and learn why Neutrality is Inadvisable.
