Inexplicable Peace

Having grown up in Oklahoma I am very familiar with the need to seek shelter in the midst of a storm. Weathering severe storms are a way of life when you grow up in Tornado Alley as I did. Sometimes the storm would last for mere minutes and sometimes the storms would come in waves that lasted for hours. But one thing I learned at an early age; all storms, no matter how severe they are, eventually pass.

Our nation and the entire world finds itself in the midst of the worst storm any of us have seen in our lifetime. A storm none of us anticipated and virtually no one predicted. A storm that leaves many feeling helpless and exposed. A storm of a kind and scope beyond what could have been imagined just a few short weeks ago.

Yet in the midst of the chaos that reigns across the globe today, God is in control. He remains on His throne and he is not surprised by any of what caught all of us off guard. In fact, His Son told us to expect things like this. Jesus told us that in this life we will have tribulation, we will have trials and we will have struggles. But He also told us that in Him, we can have peace. Peace that surpasses understanding. Peace that is not fleeting. Peace that is everlasting.

One of the last things that Jesus said to His followers before ascending into Heaven was in the form of a promise. He promised to leave His peace with us and He called all of us to be courageous in the midst of the storm. And it is His peace that is so baffling to the world. His peace is inexplicable in the eyes of the world.

And this inexplicable peace, is magnetic! In times like these, the world needs peace that endures, peace that will not fade, peace that will not wear off. Only Christ offers that kind of peace and He has given it to all of His disciples to use in times likes these. And when that type of peace is manifested in our lives, others notice! And when others notice, the Spirit is at work and gospel conversations flourish.

So, lift up your eyes for the fields are white unto harvest and Jesus has entrusted you with the antidote for the fear, and doom and gloom that has gripped the world. Now more than ever, we need to be salt and light to the world. As Paul told the Colossians, set you mind on things above and avail yourself to the Spirit. You are a beacon of hope to a lost and dying world. Let your light shine! Rejoice, be gracious, don’t worry, be prayerful and trust God. That is the Holy Spirit’s prescription for peace as Paul told the Philippians. Make sure you’re following it, especially in times like these.
