Final Instruction (Luke 24:36-53)

Do you remember the classic 1970’s commercial from Heinz Ketchup? You know the one where the two boys are having burgers and one must wait forever for the ketchup bottle to be passed. The one with the classic theme song playing: “An-tic-i-pa-tion, an-tic-i-pa-a-tion, it’s making me wait…”  And I’ll be that I’m not the only one who just heard Carly Simon singing it in their head.

The premise of that commercial of course is that somethings are truly worth the wait, and indeed that is so. I cannot say that ketchup or catchup would make my top ten list but there are many things that are worth waiting for in life and some things are worth waiting a long time to get.

We have a situation somewhat like that as we come to the final session in our study of Luke’s Gospel. Jesus has just revealed Himself to his disciples following His resurrection. At first it terrified them but then their excitement grew and culminated in a spectacular event that left them overwhelmed with joy and eagerly looking forward to the future. They were anticipating something on the horizon that left them energized and enthusiastic. They could hardly contain themselves and they poured back into the city after witnessing the event that wet their appetite for more to come.

What event was it that caused such a stir and transformed the disciples from a terrified bunch of folks who were holed up in a locked room to a group of electrified followers who could no longer contain their enthusiasm. A group who boldly engaged the opposition party with newfound courage. Join us tomorrow for the final session in our study of Luke’s Gospel to find out.  It will leave you hungry for more and eagerly anticipating the start of Act II in Luke’s epic work.
