Hardly a day goes by that we don’t hear the word conspiracy used in society today. Over the past few years, it has become one of the most frequently used words in America, if not the world. Most often used in tandem with the word theory these days, to denote nefarious acts of subterfuge wrought or accused of being wrought by members of our government or others in power. But one need not look too hard to find the ever-present conspiracy theories about JFK’s death or an alien/UFO cover-up.
Despite the derisive and often nonsensical nature of these modern-day rhetorical arguments, there are indeed real-life conspiracies unfolding around the world every day under the cover of darkness, both now and throughout history. Evil knows no bounds, as the saying goes. Such is life, now and in the past. The father of lies, is constantly at work.
We have come to a point in our study of the Gospel of Luke, when Jesus knows that His time is short, and He chooses to celebrate His final Passover meal with His disciples. He hand-picked each one of them for specific reasons and He has carefully mentored them for three long years. They are as close to family as anyone could possible be and He looks forward to celebrating the Passover with them, one last time.
But His enemies, both physical and spiritual, are not resting well. They are consternated, exasperated, and enraged. He has embarrassed and humiliated them time-after-time, over-and-over again, on their home turf no less. And they will not stop until they bring Him down. Men have tried and failed, Satan has seen enough and he’s tired of waiting, they are inept in his view. So, he decides to intervene, personally. It only takes one, and he has found the weak link. The die has been cast; the conspiratorial plan has been sprung. Behind the scenes, the plot to kill Jesus has found legs.
Meanwhile, Jesus, knowing all, including the final outcome of their devious plot, continues on with His plans to celebrate a final Passover meal with His most trusted friends; His chosen messengers, who will soon carry on in His place. He knows what lies ahead; they do not. Nevertheless, He is steadfast in His resolve and eager to share one last celebratory meal with His friends. A new day is dawning, and they must be prepared for it. The old is passing away, the new is coming and the disciples stand on the precipice of mighty change. Oblivious to it all!
Yes, the conspiracy is advancing at breakneck speed and the traitor’s deed is nearly done, but there is a new Lamb headed to the altar for this Passover, and He is a volunteer! He is the One! And Luke takes us inside the journey to the upper room and he gives us a glimpse into the backstory unfolding simultaneously behind the scenes. I hope to see you online for our study this week as we see this powerful scene come to life right before our eyes from the pages of Luke’s divinely inspired Gospel.
